Red Wedding Dresses – The Original Tradition

Where did the tradition of White wedding dresses come from anyway?

The idea of a “White Wedding” is attributed to Queen VIctoria’s wedding to Prince ALbert in 1840. She wore an opulent white lace wedding dress, which at the time was very unconventional. The white wedding dress quickly became popular among Victorian era high-society as a symbol of status, innocence, and purity. By the end of Word War II, the white wedding dress had spread from Europe to the Americas and become a standard wedding tradition for western brides.

Red wedding dresses are the orignal tradition

Before Queen Victoria made the white wedding dress popular, the traditional dress of the time for Royal brides were beautiful gowns embroidered with white, silver, and gold thread, the most popular color being red wedding dresses. Other colors commonly worn at the time were Yellow, Pink, Blue, Brown, Grey, Black, and Emerald Green wedding dresses.

Imagine if Queen Victoria had worn a red lace wedding dress on her wedding day? What would the tradition be today? You could walk into a bridal store to find racks of wedding gowns by your favorite designers in a rainbow of color choices. On one side you might see a beautiful ruby red wedding gown from Vera Wang, or  sleek canary yellow wedding dress by Amalia Carrara. Wouldn’t that be fun?

The color options would open you up to a new world of choice for your wedding theme, dress, bridesmaids dresses… everything!
