The Significance of Flower Girl Dresses

Buying a flower girl dress can be a headache.  If you are shopping far in advance of the wedding, you need to take the girl’s growth into consideration and buy larger, and then have the dress altered and fitted closer to the wedding.  The costs of these dresses even for tiny tots can be quite high.  Why are the dresses that flower girls wear such a big deal?

Mini Me: The Little Bride

Surprisingly, flower girls originated in Ancient Roman times, so this is not a new notion.  The flower girl role allowed a younger family member to participate in the wedding.  She also served as a miniature version of the bride.  When flower girls walk down the aisle in their pretty little flower girl dresses, strewing flower petals, the guests at the wedding have time to reflect on the bride’s youth and how far she has come in her life.  Together with the ring bearer, these children also give us a symbolic glimpse of the couple’s future children.

Say Yes to the Flower Girl Dress

We all know that bridal gowns are a big deal.  There are even reality shows on TV about the process of finding the right dress for each bride!  There is a lot of time and work involved in outfitting a bride.  In many weddings, flower girls do literally represent the bride in miniature, wearing white or ivory flower girl dresses that are replicas of the bride’s gown.  Other brides on different income levels or with more simple or casual tastes may have no problem with cheap flower girl dresses, provided they are in keeping with the colors and overall style of the wedding.  Ultimately, the bride dictates the look, even though the parents usually foot the bill.

Just for the Fun of It

Most women and girls love the idea of a wedding, so participating in one is a special joy for a little girl.  You can find dresses in a range of sizes, even toddler flower girls dresses, because most brides know of a special little girl who would love to help out on their special day.
